The old saying goes, “When you are a hammer, everything is a nail.” And the same goes for an orthopedic surgeon. “When you are an orthopedic surgeon, every damaged joint looks like a surgery to be scheduled $$$$$.”

And it’s true, I have my own biases as a naturopathic physician.

I’m not anti-surgery. There are most definitely times when surgery is the best option. It’s also the one with the most RISK involved. Anesthesia risk, infection risk, scar tissue, poor quality rehab, etc, etc.

We routinely see major improvements in strength, range of motion and reduced pain in our clients who have been told that they need joint replacements. The word “miracle” gets thrown around a lot in our program. It’s not a miracle. It’s the body’s innate ability to heal.

How do we do it?

Let’s take a look at some of my top 3 ways to give the best fighting chance to restore the joint that God gave you.

  1. Better Building Blocks. In order to rebuild healthy cartilage and bony surfaces, we need to have the best building blocks possible in our bodies. This doesn’t come from the Standard American Diet!

In order to provide the body with everything it needs to properly repair a joint, here’s my list of “must-have” supplements:

  • Active Absorbable Algal Calcium (AAA Ca) with Boron
  • Vit D3 and K2
  • Collagen peptides
  • Glucosamine, MSM

And here are a few studies to support these recommendations, for those who, like me, always say “Show me the science.”

2.     Stimulate Stem Cells

There are a few supplements out there that have been clinically proven to help increase your body’s production of it’s own stem cells

One of my favorite products uses a cell wall extract from Lactobacillus fermentum and has been shown to double the release of Endothelial Progenitor Cells (EPCs). These endothelial cells make up the walls of our blood vessels. When we can repair our microcirculation, we can better assist the delivery of those building blocks mentioned earlier into the areas of our body that need them the most.

Side effects? Most of the testimonials for this product report better skin, hair, nails, energy and men being able to ditch the little blue bedtime pill!

3.    Activate to Regenerate

We use advanced electrical waveforms and biofeedback based on impedance in the My Pain Eraser program to stimulate your brain’s awareness of the repair work that needs to be done. Clients learn techniques like Stem Cell Circles – a way to slightly irritate the periosteum – the lining of the bone – to elicit a regenerative response.

The periosteum is highly mechanosensitive – sensitive to pressure.

Other ways to activate the periosteum include Periosteal Stimulation Therapy (PST) – using acupuncture needles to deliver high-frequency electrical stimulation. Prolotherapy or Platelet-rich plasma injections also target the periosteum – practitioners use a tapping technique with a needle on the periosteum to stimulate the repair process.

“Periosteum is highly mechanosensitive, and the pluripotent osteo- and chondroprogenitor cells that reside in it are more mechanically sensitive even than mesenchymal stem cells. The periosteal membrane provides cells for growth, development, maturation, adaptation, and repair of our bones throughout our entire life.”

I really enjoy the non-invasive approach of our device program these days. I used to treat people like pin cushions all day long. It’s been a long time since I’ve approached another human being with a sharp pointy stick and we enjoy better results now than before! J

So there it is – my 3-step plan to restoring your joints! Better Building Blocks, Stimulate the Stem Cells, and Activate to Regenerate.
